Man gives parents portrait of Obi-Wan Kenobi, tells them it’s Jesus (and they believed it)

A lot of families have inside jokes during the holidays. My family has a pair of Garfield boxer shorts that someone in our family gets as a “gift” each year ever since I was in elementary school. This year, I had the pleasure of unwrapping it, to the great enjoyment of my kids who were in on the “joke” from the beginning. I don’t see why it’s funny, but it’s been a “tradition” for over two decades now, so here we are.

But as we found out through Reddit this week, sometimes people aren’t aware that there’s a joke even happening… Which leads to the question of when do you tell someone that they’re involved in a joke?

A Reddit user from Utah uploaded a picture of a gift that he gave to his mother, who is Mormon. Using the classic Ewan MacGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi meme, he told his mom that it was a picture of Jesus.

And she believed him.

I’ve made a huge mistake. Mom loves her Jesus Christmas present and I’m not sure how to get out of this thing alive when she figures out. from r/PrequelMemes

I’ve made a huge mistake. Mom loves her Jesus Christmas present and I’m not sure how to get out of this thing alive when she figures out.

Huge mistake? Or supreme victory royale?

An amazing gift

This isn’t a new idea – the meme has been around for years.

And for the record, I won’t ever *not* enjoy the meme.

Still makes more sense than the actual Bible.

And, of course, the seasonal favorite:

I think it’d be great to just let her figure it out on her own. What’s the harm?

Obi-wan and Jesus are both fictional characters, they’re both typically depicted wearing robes, they both have books written about them where they attempted to help others in need, their stories are pretty bad, and neither one makes a whole lot of sense. (We’ll ignore the fact that Jesus wouldn’t be white.)

Other Redditors weighed in with their thoughts:

THIS.

“Lost a mother’s trust u/cd4life has. How embarrassing. How embarrassing.” –SMAMtastic

Hopefully this isn’t the case.

“I imagine her reaction will be something like this:”
