Ruth Bader Ginsburg Has Lung Cancer Surgery, Blocks Trump From Her Hospital Bed

Ruth Bader Ginsburg underwent surgery to remove cancer from her lungs.

Because it’s a lifetime appointment, many progressives have been heartened over the years by the resilience and strength of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Justice Ginsburg , lovingly known as “The Notorious RBG” to her more ardent followers, has been on the court since President Bill Clinton nominated her and she was confirmed in 1993, by an impressive 96-3 margin, in the Senate. She is one of the four “liberal” justices currently serving, and this week she gave liberals all over the country quite a scare when it was announced that she had undergone surgery to remove cancerous nodules from her lungs.

Justice Ginsburg’s medical team thankfully detected the nodules very early, when CT scans were being done after the octogenarian legal scholar fell and broke some ribs earlier this year. According to NBC News, Justice Ginsburg had biopsies done when the nodules were found, and both were assessed to be malignant.

Two nodules in the lower lobe of her left lung were discovered incidentally during tests she received while being treated for rib fractures sustained in a fall last month. Both nodules were found to be malignant during an initial evaluation. (NBC)

At 85 years old, Justice Ginsburg is the eldest member on the high court. Because of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s extra-Constitutional maneuvering during the final months of Barack Obama’s presidency — he blocked Merrick Garland’s nomination after Antonin Scalia’s death —  she also represents an ideological minority on the bench. Of course, I might point out that the minority on the Supreme Court bench that liberals currently have is much like their minority in the Senate, and the one they were under in the House for so long — in other words its built on Republican smoke and mirrors, but that’s another discussion for another time.

Fans of Justice Ginsburg can perhaps take heart in the fact that RBG has shown some rather incredible strength in the past. She has dealt with heart issues before, and even has had more than one prior run-in with cancer. I’m not saying she’s superhuman, mind you, and no one can outrun Father Time forever, but the tenacious Ginsburg should certainly not be discounted at this point.

Ginsburg has quickly recovered from a number of health issues in recent years. The former ACLU litigator has survived multiple bouts with cancer, and in 2014 underwent a procedure to have a stent placed in her right coronary artery. (NBC)

No, really, you shouldn’t count RBG out, not by a long shot, even after she had lung cancer surgery. Because that woman somehow mustered the strength and intestinal fortitude she needed to vote, from her hospital bed to block the Trump administration’s asylum policy change. Chief Justice John Roberts joined RBG and the three other more liberal judges to enjoin Trump from making it harder for people coming into the country to seek asylum.

NBC reported that Ginsburg voted from her hospital bed. National Public Radio and Mother Jones magazine said she cast the decisive vote in the 5-4 decision against the Trump administration shortly after her surgery to remove two cancerous nodules from her lungs. The ruling blocks the Trump administration from implementing new rules prohibiting people from seeking asylum if they cross the border illegally. (HuffPost)

Lung cancer is, of course, no laughing matter. I just lost one of my good friends in comedy this year to it, but thankfully for Ruth Bader Ginsburg , her loved ones, and supporters, her doctors caught it exceedingly early. That and the fact that she appears to be one of the toughest humans on the planet, means that for progressives they can still hope for her to hang on long enough to retire in a couple years, but Ginsburg still has to find out if her lymph nodes contain cancer cells, and she’s not “out of the woods” just yet.

Here’s hoping she’s out of the woods soon enough though. But we all know you can’t keep a good gangsta down too long, so we’re sure RBG will be back slingin’ opinions in no time flat.
