Poll: 48% of white evangelicals would support Kavanaugh even if the allegations were true

This is disturbing, and really makes you question how the religious right can say they have any sense of moral high ground over anyone else.

A Marist poll of 1000 respondents found that 48% of white evangelicals would support Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh even if the allegations of sexual assault against Dr. Christine Blasey Ford were found to be true.

As Vox explains:

Aside from the 48 percent who said they would support Kavanaugh’s appointment to the court, 36 percent of white evangelicals say they would not support it, and 16 percent did not have an answer. Mirroring the poll results, many prominent white evangelicals have spoken out in Kavanaugh’s defense, characterizing the allegations against him as part of a liberal plot to waylay his nomination. Jerry Falwell Jr., president of the evangelical Liberty University, sent 300 women Liberty students to Washington, DC, to support Kavanaugh during this week’s Senate confirmation hearings.

… How? Why”

How can these people, the same who claim that they are morally superior to atheists, support him no matter what?

The real issue

We might be overthinking it. After all, these are the same people who cherry pick the Bible to suit their personal beliefs, so why wouldn’t they apply the same logic to someone like Kavanaugh or Trump?

The truth is they don’t care what he has or hasn’t done. They don’t. There’s no way they do. What they do care about is having someone at the top executing their agenda. And they’ve very clearly found that in Trump, and Trump has done a great job extending that with his Supreme Court nominations.

The only things the religious right cares about is guns, god, and restricting women’s healthcare options. The ends justify the means for them – at whatever moral cost it takes.

Evangelical “leaders” are demonstrating this concept. Vox explained:

Likewise, prominent evangelical Franklin Graham has expressed support for Kavanaugh, minimizing the nature of the alleged assault and characterizing it as merely a clumsy come-on, telling the Christian Broadcasting Network, “She said no and he respected it and walked away.”

Time for a fact check: She tried to scream, and Kavanaugh allegedly covered her mouth.

Graham went on to say: “It’s just a shame that a person like Judge Kavanaugh, who has a stellar record — that somebody can bring something up that he did as a teenager close to 40 years ago.”
