Rejoice, Cosmos fans! It was announced today that the Carl Sagan documentary series, Cosmos, has been approved for a second season by Fox. The show is now hosted by our favorite astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson. The new season of the show will be called Cosmos: Possible Worlds.

The Verge reported:

The networks made the announcement today during the Television Critics Association winter press tour, and deGrasse Tyson and producer Seth McFarland confirmed the news on Twitter, saying that the season will air in Spring 2019 on Fox and the National Geographic channel.

Sagan hosted the original Cosmos in 1980, which was at the time the most successful US public TV series of all time (it was later overtaken by Ken Burns’ documentary The Civil War). The rebooted version, titled A Spacetime Odyssey, covered a broad range of topics, such as the scale of the universe, the history of science, and climate change, and was well received by audiences and critics.

If you’re unfamiliar with the show, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey is a 2014 American science documentary television series. The show is a follow-up to the 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which was presented by Carl Sagan on the Public Broadcasting Service and is considered a milestone for scientific documentaries. This series was developed to bring back the foundation of science to network television at the height of other scientific-based television series and films. The show is presented by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who, as a young high school student, was inspired by Sagan. Among the executive producers are Seth MacFarlane, whose financial investment was instrumental in bringing the show to broadcast television, and Ann Druyan, a co-author and co-creator of the original television series and Sagan’s wife. The show is produced by Brannon Braga, and Alan Silvestri composed the backing score (Wikipedia).

Fox also released this teaser for the second season of the series on YouTube:

I’m really looking forward to the new season!
