FBI considers white supremacist groups as great a threat as ISIS

The threat of white supremacists in the United States is real, and the FBI is reportedly taking it just as seriously as ISIS, according to FBI Director Chris Wray.

While speaking to senators, Director Wray said “We take both of them very, very seriously. Our focus is on violence and threats of violence against the people of this country. That’s our concern – it’s not ideology.”

“A lot of the [domestic terrorism] cases we bring, we’re able to charge under gun charges, explosive charges, all manner of other crimes,” Wray said.

In addition, he noted “We also work a lot with state and local law enforcement who can sometimes bring straightforward, easy-to-make cases; homicide cases, things like that.”

According to The Independent:

… Mr Wray told the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee he considered the threat from both types of groups equally.

Yet Democratic senator Claire McCaskill said the number of attacks carried out by white supremacists were “almost triple” those of those carried out by people who identified with groups such as Isis. Government data obtained by The Hill suggested the number of white supremacist attacks compared to those from radical Islamic groups was as many as two to one.

“I don’t think Americans understand the level of threat we have in this country from white supremacists,” said Ms McCaskill.

A legitimate threat

As I wrote yesterday, there is a long history of violence coming from far right-wing conservatives. And in true whataboutism form, many will say “wHat AbOuT tHe vIoLenCe oN ThE LeFt?” This would be a valid complaint if there wasn’t actual data – objective facts – that almost two thirds of domestic terrorism is linked to right wing extremists. So it’s really no surprise that these hate groups are being taken very seriously by the FBI.
