Conservatives are upset that Christian Bale thanked Satan in Golden Globes speech

While I haven’t yet seen it, the new movie Vice is definitely on the short list of films that I *must* see. The bioflick stars Christian Bale portraying former vice president Dick Cheney and his rise as the most powerful (and evil) vice president in United States history.

The film itself was written and directed by Adam McKay. If you don’t know who he is, you absolutely know of his work. Alongside Will Ferrell (who is one of my favorite comedians of all time), he co-wrote Talladega Nights, The Other Guys, and of course Anchorman. McKay has done short films for Saturday Night Live, was a producer of the hilarious Between Two Ferns (with Zach Galifianakis), and was an executive producer on Drunk History.

Oh yeah, he’s also the founder of Funny or Die.

Last night at the Golden Globes, Christian Bale won “best actor” for his role in Vice. During his speech, Bale said that McKay had to “find somebody can be absolutely charisma-free, and reviled by everybody,” in reference to finding someone to play the role of Dick Cheney.

But beyond stating objective facts, Bale also thanked someone very special who motivated him for the role: Satan.

Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration for playing this role.

It’s funny, especially since we often hear people thank god for winning awards or sportsball games (opposed to admitting that they themselves are extremely talented and deserving, of course).

I’m not sure how much of a joke it actually was, given the things Cheney did while in office, but many conservatives certainly weren’t amused by it.

I truly believe Satan controls the entertainment industry and if you want to become an absolute megastar you have to sell your soul literally.

Oh, okay.

Christian Bale shows low class- earns Golden Globe, yet bashes former VP Dick Cheney, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in Golden Globes speechhttps://t.co/9ZN31gEodG

Of course Fox News is upset.

Christian Bale compares Dick Cheney to Satan, and we’re supposed to take everything these people say about Donald Trump seriously. No credibility.

Seems like an ad hominem fallacy to me.

There’s also some level of irony that a man whose first name is Christian played such an evil role and thanked Satan for it.

Most found it just as amusing as I did, though.

In winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor, I have never heard anything more appropriate than Christian Bale thanking Satan for his inspiration in playing Dick Cheney. #GoldenGlobes

Christian Bale just thanked Satan for giving him the inspiration to play Dick Cheney and then blasted Mitch McConnell. I love 2019!

Christian Bale just referred to Dick Cheney as a “charisma free asshole”–and thanked “Satan” for providing the inspiration to play him. Gee, some people in America consider Cheney a bright, principled, conservative public servant and loving husband and father.#GoldenGIobes

The Church of Satan responded on Twitter by saying:

To us, Satan is a symbol of pride, liberty and individualism, and it serves as an external metaphorical projection of our highest personal potential. As Mr. Bale’s own talent and skill won him the award, this is fitting. Hail Christian! Hail Satan!

But even the man downstairs – Satan himself – even weighed in on the speech:

You’re welcome Christian Bale!
