Archbishop says he ‘wasn’t sure if it was a crime for priests to rape children’

You read the headline correctly and no, unfortunately, this is not satire. The former chancellor of the St. Paul and Minneapolis archdiocese, Robert Carlson, said under oath that he “wasn’t sure if he knew that it was illegal for priests to have sex with children.” This comes after he admitted to protecting predator priests when he was chancellor of the archdiocese in the 1980s.

He also conveniently forgot if he reported sexual abuse to law enforcement from 1970 to 1994.

According to Minnesota Public Radio:

Carlson, 69, testified as part of a lawsuit that alleges the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis and the Diocese of Winona created a public nuisance by keeping information on abusive priests secret. The man who filed the suit claims he was sexually abused by the Rev. Thomas Adamson in the 1970s.

The case has already forced the depositions of Archbishop John Nienstedtformer Archbishop Harry Flynn and other top officials. It also required church officials to make public the names of abusive priests and turn over more than 60,000 pages of internal documents to the plaintiff’s attorneys.

This makes me wonder how Christians can claim any semblance of moral superiority over atheists with a straight face.

Carlson’s 2014 deposition just serves as further evidence that it’s time to quit the Catholic Church.

The coverup of abuse at the hands of Catholic priests is not anything new. It’s something systemic, ingrained into the very fabric of the Catholic Church. The recent Pennsylvania grand jury report is merely the tip of the iceberg. All over the country, we’re seeing prosecutors going after the rampant abuse that has plagued the Catholic Church for decades – if not centuries. The state of New York issued subpoenas to every single diocese in the state. My hometown of Indianapolis seems to be headed that direction, too.

I’ve said this before. The Catholic Church has repeatedly demonstrated an inability and unwillingness to protect children. I can’t think of a single other organization that would be allowed to continue existing with the appalling history the Catholic Church has.

Even if you can look beyond the Catholic Church’s systematic abuse and cover-up – and I don’t see how any decent person could – you have to question how a loving god would allow such horrible things to happen by so many priests so many children.

The Catholic Church is scrambling to do what it’s best at: protecting itself. The “leadership” in the church doesn’t care about the victims or their families. They only care about self-preservation.

By tithing to the Catholic Church you are giving tacit approval and endorsement to their long history of sexually abusing and raping children. At this point, you have become part of the problem by helping finance them.

Any decent person should recognize that it’s time to quit the Catholic Church. Now.
