Animation for ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 4 has begun, revealing possible release date

Rick and Morty is arguably one of the best adult-oriented animated shows in the history of history. And if you disagree, I’ll allow Reddit to explain why you’re wrong:

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volyaliterature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

Copypasta aside, I’ll be the first to admit that the most rabid members of the fan base are extremely toxic. This very likely has turned off many would-be fans to the show. In fact, I didn’t watch a single episode of the show until well after Season 2 finished premiering, in part due to how obnoxious I found many of the fans to be.

But while they’re a very small minority of the fans, they’re a rather loud minority, which makes them seem more prominent than they actually are.

Yikes.

But something that many fans of the show also find annoying is the delay between seasons.

Season 1 ran a total of eleven episodes from December 2013 to April 2014, with each episode being better than the last. Season 2 premiered over a year later, and ran ten episodes from July 2015 through October of the same year. Then we had to wait nearly two years for Season 3, running ten episodes from July 2017 to October 2017.

And the creators know it. After all, Season 3 ended with Mr. Poopy Butthole explaining that they would “See you for Season 4 in, like, a really long time.”

Well, we’re beginning to see a light at the end of a very long tunnel. (Is that a poop pun? Yeah, that’s a poop pun.)

Eric Bofa Nfon, who works on the animation team for the show, took to Twitter last week to unofficially announce that animation for Season 4 is underway.

(That’s an Emmy award on the table, which they won for their Pickle Rick episode in Season 3.)

And to get an idea of when we can expect new episodes, we need to look at the production schedule for Season 3, as Inverse pointed out:

History tells us that the Season 3 premiere didn’t premiere until April 1, 2017, with the rest of the season commencing on July 30. That’s roughly seven months of time, or 10 if you count from the end of writing to Episode 2’s air date.

As tough as it might be to hear, this probably means the Season 4 premiere is still seven months away, placing it sometime around mid-August. That’s totally plausible when compared to last season, especially because the bulk of Season 3 ran during August and September of 2017.

UGH.

The show hits on so many levels, so maybe this is just another level that creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland want it to hit on. Maybe it’s some kind of post-postmodern absurdist performance art to drive fans crazy in anticipation for new episodes by delaying us the satisfaction of more episodes.

Sure, part of the delay in Season 4 was negotiating a new contract with Cartoon Network, but when they announced that the network ordered 70 additional episodes of the show, many fans (myself included) thought we’d see new seasons on a more regular basis.

Either way, we’ve waited nearly a year and a half already, so what’s another six or seven months?
